UC Santa Barbara occupies a genuinely rare setting for a research university - a bluff-top campus on the Pacific coast, wrapped around a lagoon between the San Rafael and San Miguel residence halls. Starting with the 2026-27 academic year, UCSB became one of the few UC campuses to guarantee four full years of on-campus housing, addressing a local rental market where private rents can reach $4,000 a month.

Fall 2026 Move-In Details
Look for your assignment letter in mid-August to select your specific move-in time and day - each residence hall has its own dates and times within this window. If your travel plans change, you can simply show up at your new time rather than calling the office.

- Arrival window
- A specific move-in date and time selected via your assignment letter, sent by mid-August - each residence hall has its own move-in schedule within the general Sept. 18-20 window.
- Parking
- Unload your car using the printed unloading voucher from your assignment email, then move your vehicle immediately to long-term parking - an electronic parking permit is required in advance for long-term lots.
- What you'll receive
- A small, limited number of move-in carts, available first-come, first-served - bringing your own hand truck or dolly is strongly encouraged given the limited supply.
Move-in day tips
- Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
- Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
- Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
- Watch the loading-zone time limit - many campuses require you to move your vehicle to longer-term parking after unloading.
