Western Carolina University is a public university in Cullowhee in the mountains of western North Carolina and part of the University of North Carolina System. It was founded in 1889 as Cullowhee Academy, and its teams, the Catamounts, compete in NCAA Division I in the Southern Conference. First-year students must live on campus for two academic years and new transfer students for one, unless they receive an exemption. Fall 2026 move-in runs over several days in mid-August.

The fall 2026 move-in period runs Aug. 7 to Aug. 16. The page does not say which dates are assigned to first-year students, so check your housing assignment email. Hours run in morning, midday and afternoon blocks Sunday through Thursday, with an added evening window on Friday and Saturday.

Move-in day logistics

Students start at the Field House parking lot to get keys and an information packet.
Parking
After unloading, move your vehicle to the designated lot right away. Parents and visitors should move to a yellow commuter lot after helping unload and should not park in the same lot as the student; the Cat-Tran shuttle is an option. Several residence hall lots are closed Aug. 6-16 and towing enforcement begins Aug. 6. Freshmen need a parking permit at all times, registered online with no physical permit issued.

Move-in day tips

  • Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
  • Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
  • Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
  • Watch the loading-zone time limit - many campuses require you to move your vehicle to longer-term parking after unloading.
