Virginia State University is a public historically Black land-grant university in Petersburg, founded in 1882. Enrollment has grown past 5,000 students and has outpaced on-campus housing, so the university has used temporary annexes and other arrangements and is building a 454-bed residence hall beside Quad II. Residence halls include traditional and suite-style buildings, and each hall is assigned its own new-student move-in day.

Fall 2026 Move-In Details
Residence halls open at 8:00 a.m. for new students, with each hall assigned a day. On Friday, Aug. 7 it is Howard, Langston, Quad 1 A and B, the Quad 1 and Quad 2 Annexes, and Williams. On Saturday, Aug. 8 it is Branch, Campbell, Magnolia, Seward and Whiting. Students pick a move-in time frame in their online housing portal, and flow instructions are emailed before arrival. Continuing students move in Friday, Aug. 14. Bring no more than two additional helpers. Spectators such as young siblings and elderly family members are not permitted, and non-student guests should leave once items are moved in. Where elevators exist, they are limited to one family group at a time, for moving items or mobility needs.
Check your assignment in the housing portal for your specific date and time.
Move-in day tips
- Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
- Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
- Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
- Watch the loading-zone time limit - many campuses require you to move your vehicle to longer-term parking after unloading.
