Hilo, Hawaii

🏫 Public UniversityEst. 1945🔗 hilo.hawaii.edu

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, the state's only public liberal arts college, sits on the Big Island beneath Maunakea's world-famous observatories, home to the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center, whose three titanium-clad cones echo the island's own volcanoes, with new Vulcans moving into traditional halls like Hale Kanilehua each August ahead of orientation, timed carefully around the Hawaiʻi Statehood Holiday.

Fall 2026 Move-In Dates

Friday, Aug. 21 is the Hawaiʻi Statehood Holiday, falling right in the middle of orientation week - expect state offices and some campus services to be closed that day. Freshmen can apply to join a Living Learning Community (LLC) to be placed in housing with students of similar interests and career goals. All residents are required to be on a meal plan except for those living in the apartment-style Hale ʻIkena. A free airport shuttle sign-up opens in August to help welcome new students into the campus ʻohana.

Move-in day tips

  • Arrive during your assigned window - early arrivals often just wait longer.
  • Bring a rolling cart or hand truck; loading-zone carts run out fast.
  • Parking near freshman halls fills up quickly - have a backup plan or drop-off spot.
  • Loading zones usually enforce a strict time limit (often 30 minutes) before you're expected to move your car to long-term parking.
  • Activate your student ID online before you arrive - many schools require it for building and elevator access from day one.
  • If you want your bed lofted or the frame height adjusted, check whether your school needs that request submitted online in advance - most won't do it on the spot.
  • Check your school's specific package-acceptance window before shipping anything ahead - most won't hold early deliveries outside a set date range.
  • Unpack essentials first: bedding, toiletries, and chargers, before anything else.
