Northern State University is a public university in Aberdeen, South Dakota, governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents and founded in 1901 as Northern Normal and Industrial School. Its 66-acre campus on the south side of Aberdeen is home to the NCAA Division II Wolves. Residence halls include traditional double rooms, singles and suite-style options, including the newer Great Plains East, Great Plains West and Wolves Memorial Suites.

Fall 2026 Move-In Details
Move-in runs Friday, Aug. 21 through Sunday, Aug. 23. New student move-in begins at 8 a.m. on Aug. 21, and students schedule a check-in time through an online form. On Aug. 22 and 23, students check in directly at their residence hall from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and carry their own belongings. A New Student Convocation is held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Move-in day logistics
- Check-in location
- On Aug. 21, check in at the Barnett Center parking lot from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to receive a move-in packet and a parking spot assignment for your hall. On Aug. 22 and 23, check in directly at your residence hall.
- Parking
- On Aug. 21, the Unpacking the Pack Crew helps unload your vehicle and tells you when to move it. Campus parking permits are available from the Parking Office.
Move-in day tips
- Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
- Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
- Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
- Watch the loading-zone time limit - many campuses require you to move your vehicle to longer-term parking after unloading.
