Move-In
Fall 2026 Move-In Details
New students move in Wednesday, Aug. 19 or Thursday, Aug. 20. Register for a move-in appointment in the housing portal, which is required to enter the hall, and activate your NIU OneCard beforehand. Returning residents move in Aug. 22 and 23.
Check your assignment in the housing portal for your specific date and time.
Move-in day logistics
- Check-in location
- Check in at your hall's designated location with your OneCard or a photo ID to collect your room key.
- Parking
- Unload in the designated zones, then move your vehicle to long-term parking. Pack into one vehicle, two at most. Trailers and U-Hauls are not allowed. Volunteers help first-year students on Aug. 19. Parking permits are bought online and tied to your license plate.
Move-in day tips
- Arrive during your assigned move-in window - arriving early may mean waiting until your time slot.
- Bring a rolling cart or hand truck - campus carts can run out quickly during busy move-in periods.
- Have a parking backup plan - spaces near residence halls can fill up quickly, so know where you can unload if your preferred area is full.
- Watch the loading-zone time limit - many campuses require you to move your vehicle to longer-term parking after unloading.
